NFL Week 1 Verdicts

Some tough match ups await us in Week 1 of the NFL season as the majority of teams get under way on Sunday evening (GMT)

For those that haven’t bet on NFL games before I will offer a brief explanation of how it works:
Both teams receive a point spread, with one receiving a plus score and the other team a minus. To win your bet that team has to cover the spread set by the bookmaker. For example this week the New Orleans Saints (-3) v Atlanta Falcons (+3). For Atlanta to win the bet they have to beat the Saints by 3 points, anything less hands the win (in betting terms) to the Saints. It’s basically a similar system to rugby union for those used to betting on that.

Week 1 selections:

NE Patriots to beat Buffalo by 10

New England have a young receiving corps which raises concerns for some but I’m confident an in-form Tom Brady will find plenty of targets. He has been superb so far in pre-season. A 10 point spread is fairly high against a Bills team that may not be as bad as some people think. However the Pats should have enough to win by a few scores especially as the Bills go into the game with a few key injuries.

Tampa Bay (-3.5) to beat the New York Jets

The Jets are going to have a long season. They don’t know who their quarterback is going to be and the defence looks weaker than a few seasons ago. Tampa Bay have some genuine offensive talent and should cover this low points deficit.

Seahawks (-3.5) to beat Carolina

Tough away trip for Seahawks but they will be full of confidence after a fantastic 2012 season. I don’t see Carolina having enough to stop the Seahawks racking up the points.

Houston Texans (-3.5) to beat San Diego

Another away trip in this fourfold as the Texans travel to a revamped Chargers team in Monday night football. The Chargers are on the rebuild this season with new coaching staff in place and as such represent a bit of a unknown quality, but the Texans are packed with offensive talent and if they get going will be hard to stop.

A fourfold this week of New England, Tampa Bay, Seattle and Houston will pay around 12/1 with bet365
