Champions League Punts

So we are a matter of minutes before the new Champions League campaign kicks off for the first half of Europe’s elite. Here are my little nuggets:

To Win Outright

Bayern Munich

After their dominance in last years competition, Bayern Munich look hard to oppose. Pep Guardiola has inherited a squad that arguably rivals the band of all stars he led at Barcelona just a couple of seasons ago. Not to mention the welcome addition of Mario Goetze from beaten finalists and rivals Dortmund. BetVictor are offering best odds of 4/1 and although it’s going to require a decent stake to return anything worth while, Munich are going to take some beating and it’s tough to see how it might not be buying money in my opinion.

Jose Mourinho has written the book on how to be successful in Europe. The fact that the top prize still eludes him under his Chelsea reign will be eating away at him and I think he’ll be making it his top priority to go far in this competition once again. They have the squad to cope with the very best. It’s just a matter of getting them to all sing in harmony together, and get a decent path through to the final along the way. Best odds of 10/1 are up for grabs and it could be worth a dabble on the Blues.

Juventus are best odds of 18/1 with Coral and for a team harbouring the attacking talents of Andre Pirlo, Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez, not to mention the evergreen Buffon continuing to protect between the sticks, that looks like a decent price for them to go close this year.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid return to the tournament this year riding the wave of some fine form. Boasting a 100% record in La Liga from their opening 4 games as well as only narrowly missing out on the Spanish Super Cup to Barcelona on away goals. They managed an almost unheard of 0-0 draw at the Nou Camp (as was tipped by us!) which suggests their away performances may be improving considerably. This could be key if they are to do well in this years competition. If they can do well away from home it will take a special performance from any side to take much away from the Vicente Calderon Stadium this season. At best odds of 33/1 they are my outside pick to go far this year.

Winner/Top Goalscorer

I like the look of Bayern Munich to win and Lionel Messi to be the tournaments top goalscorer. I’m not sure I need to explain my reasonings behind this! 14/1 is available with BetVictor.

As a differential, still sticking with Munich as the winners, popping Robert Lewandowski into the equation dishes out odds of 125/1! Still very much the go to guy for Dortmund’s goals this season, if they can have any sort of impact as they did last year it could be worth a few quid!

Push the boat out and go for eternal glory with a Chelsea/Lewandowski double shout and you’ll be celebrating at odds of 350/1.

Top Goalscorer

There’s littel value in going with the obvious Messi or Ronaldo punts unless you’re feeling brave enough to stick a decent wad down. So I’m looking slightly further afield. Mario Mandzukic is possibly Bayern’s top goal threat and is available at 14/1. I like the look of Dortmund’s striking options of Lewandowski (20/1) and new signing Pierre Aubameyang (33/1). Both could offer decent back-to-lay opportunities. Elsewhere Llorente (50/1) and Olivier Giroud (66/1) both offer big odds for players who are most likely going to be the main scorers for their respective clubs.
