Gameweek 5 Preview & Tips

Gameweek 5 already folks and many of you maybe looking at the gap between you and first place increasing. No? Ok might only be me then.

I also know quite a few wildcards were activated last gameweek judging by the number of new players in squads, not exactly sure how many but I’m hoping to find out. I know our very own Dan Mulkern (Gappyhilmore) managed to find a way to bring in Andre ‘Norman’ Wisdom (£4.4m)

In gameweek 3 I said not to take out Benteke and that verdict proved right! He scored last gameweek and picked up 2 bonus points and is set to bag a few against the Canaries this weekend. I also mentioned taking a risk if you’re playing catchup by bring in Negrado – scored and picked up a bonus point after coming off the bench.

Anyway, the top 3 players bought in this round, as I write, are Coleman (£5.6m), Ramsey (£5.9m) and another gooner by the name of Giroud (£9.0m).

Ramsey has been on fire last few games and pretty sure his form will continue whilst he is surrounded by players like Ozil, Cazorla, Wilshere and Walcott. I still think Giroud is a poor striker but poor strikers are made to look good when you have the likes of Ozil feeding you passes like…….Ozil.

Right, onto gameweek5…

Liverpool are on fire at the moment and face a out of form Southampton then face Sunderland and then Palace. You couldn’t ask for an easier 3 games. 26% of teams already have Sturridge and after Monday’s epic game against Jonjo Shelvey I think Victor Moses (£6.2m) may be a good player to bring in seeing as Coutinho is out with a shoulder injury. If Moses can perform like he did on Monday then I think Rodgers may have give Rodgers a bit of a headache.

Don’t forget – Luis ‘Beaver’ Suarez (£10.9m) is on his way back soon so you may want to use this weekend to put some money in the bank. He’s already in 0.6% of teams. Amazing if you already have him and doing well in your own leagues.

Verdict: Bring in Moses if you’re playing catchup or make space for Suarez.

The other game which caught my eye was Newcastle v Hull. Fancy Hatem Ben Arfa (£7.4m) to shine again here as no other Newcastle player currently sticks out for me. Always worthy of getting in and amongst the goals and assists. Ben Arfa has that ability to change a game within seconds and is such an exciting player to watch. Maybe even Papiss Cisse could get a goal. What ever happened to Papiss Cisse after this?

Note: I only embedded this clip in for the amazing commentary!

Verdict: Bring in Ben Arfa and keep him in. Take a risk with Cisse.

Spurs are away to Cardiff and after Christian Eriksen (£8.1m) getting on the scoresheet on his debut and again in Europe how could you not bring him in? Eriksen is the 4th most transferred in player this gameweek and it’s no surprise. Crafty little playmaker who, like Modric, will be involved in every build up play.

Romelu Lukaku (£7.4m) is the 5th most popular transfer in this gameweek but I’m going against the crowd. However, don’t bring him in just yet – see how he settles in at Goodison Park and then bring him in. Remember, this game is a marathon, not a sprint. He makes his debut at Upton Park, not an easy place to go and West Ham are in good form. Not expecting lots of goals here.

Swansea are away to Palace on Sunday and Michu (£8.9m) certainly looks like he’s starting to get back into the kind of player we saw last season. I’ve added Michu on to my watch list and may look to bring him in after gameweek 6.

Finally the big local derby…..Blue vs Red. Manchester is……..

manchester is red

I’m hoping for a 0-0 draw here, again no team will want to lose and both teams have lacked that killer conviction for me. United’s 2-0 win over Palace wasn’t what I was expecting. I was expecting a rout and RvP hat trick at least. Rooney is looking sharp though hey?

City drew 0-0 with Stoke and yes it was going to be a tough affair but with the squad and depth City have they should’ve annihilated Mark Hughes’ boys. Credit to Stoke for grinding out a draw – but then that’s their game.

Here’s a great post on ‘why City couldn’t beat Stoke‘.

Verdict: Bring in Eriksen, bench any United or City players & wait on Lukaku

I’m still bemused by the whole bonus point structuring/calculation so my captaincy picks this week are aimed at defenders as it seems as though a clean sheet is guaranteed 3 bonus points unless an outfield player scores 10 and assists a minimum of 5.

Captain Picks: Enrique or Terry

Differentiator Captain: Michu
